# How to Connect Existing Domains to Primeforge

Connect a domain you already own to Primeforge by pointing its nameservers to us, and learn what the Connected badge on the Domains page means.

## What does connecting a domain mean?

Primeforge creates mailboxes on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, which is ideal when you want the reliability and deliverability benefits of the major enterprise email ecosystems. You don't have to buy your domains through Primeforge. If you already own a domain, you can connect it.

**Connecting an existing domain** means pointing its nameservers to Primeforge, so we can manage its DNS records for you. The domain stays registered with your original registrar, which is where you bought it and where it is renewed. Only the DNS management moves to Primeforge.

> **Note:** Connecting a domain is free.

## Before you connect

- You need access to your registrar account, because you will change the domain's nameservers there. If your domain is on Cloudflare, nameservers can't be changed, so follow [Connecting Cloudflare domains to Primeforge](https://help.salesforge.ai/en/articles/10333619-connecting-cloudflare-domains-to-primeforge.md) instead.

- **Existing custom DNS records are removed.** Primeforge replaces them with the records your mailboxes need. If you want to keep any, contact support before you connect.

- **Existing mailboxes on the domain stop working.** Only mailboxes created in Primeforge work after the connection.

## Steps to connect your existing domain

### 1\. Log in to your Primeforge account

### 2\. Go to the Domains page

Click **Domains** in the left sidebar.

### 3\. Click "Connect Domains"

A pop-up opens. Read the instructions carefully before you continue. The key points are:

- After connecting, you need to **update the nameserver values manually** at your current registrar.

- All domains **lose their existing custom DNS records**. Contact support if you need those preserved.

- Any **existing mailboxes** on those domains stop working. Only mailboxes created in Primeforge work after the connection.

### 4\. Enter your domain and select a platform

Type your existing domain name and choose the email platform: **Google** (Google Workspace) or **Microsoft** (Microsoft 365).

### 5\. Add multiple domains (optional)

Click **\+ Add domain** to connect several domains in one go.

### 6\. Click "Initiate Connect" and continue

**Once the connection is initiated:**

The domain appears on the Domains page with the status **Propagating**. From here:

1. **Find your nameservers.** Hover over the Propagating status badge, or click the domain, to see the two nameservers assigned to your domain.

2. **Update the nameservers at your registrar.** Log in to your domain registrar and replace the existing nameservers with the two provided by Primeforge.

3. **Wait for propagation.** Once the nameservers have propagated, the domain status changes to **Active**.

Your domain is now connected to Primeforge.

## How to tell connected domains from domains bought through Primeforge

On the Domains page, every domain you connected from another registrar has a **Connected** badge next to its name. Domains you bought through Primeforge don't have the badge.

Hover over the badge to see the tooltip **Connected from another registrar**.

Mailforge and Infraforge show the same badge on their Domains pages.

### What the Connected badge means for you

- **Registration and renewal stay with your registrar.** Primeforge can't see or renew a connected domain, so keep it renewed at your registrar. Domain renews in Primeforge only for maintaining mailboxes for connected domains.

- **Keep the nameservers pointed at Primeforge.** As long as they are, Primeforge manages the DNS records your mailboxes need. If you change them at your registrar, we can no longer manage those records.

- **Support can see where your domain lives.** When you contact support about a domain, the badge shows us straight away whether it is connected or was bought through Primeforge, so we can help you faster.

## Important notes

- DNS records and domain forwarding **update automatically** once your mailboxes are created and their status becomes Active.

- Auto-renew is available for domains bought through Primeforge and is **off by default**. You can turn it on from the Domains page. Connected domains are renewed at your registrar.

- You stay the owner of a connected domain. If you ever want to move it away from Primeforge, see [How to transfer domains out of Mailforge, Infraforge, or Primeforge](https://help.salesforge.ai/en/articles/10333642-how-to-transfer-domains-out-of-mailforge-infraforge-or-primeforge.md).
